Whole-House Fans, Heat Pumps, and Mild-Climate Comfort

Most of the advice you'll read about heating and cooling was written for places with real winters and brutal summers. San Diego is neither. Our "heating season" is a couple of months of chilly mornings; our cooling problem is a handful of heat waves and the occasional Santa Ana week. Sizing equipment for Phoenix summers or Minneapolis winters — which is essentially what national guidance does — means paying for capacity you'll almost never use.

The flip side is more interesting: a mild climate opens the door to equipment that wouldn't make sense anywhere else. Two pieces in particular earn their keep here, and November — when mornings finally have a bite to them — is when homeowners start asking about both.

The whole-house fan: cooling with the ocean's help

A whole-house fan is a large, quiet fan mounted in the ceiling that pulls air through open windows and pushes it out through the attic. It doesn't chill air; it exchanges it. That's a losing strategy in Houston, but in San Diego the outdoor air does the chilling for you nearly every evening — even after a hot day, the marine influence drops temperatures fast once the sun goes down.

Run the fan for twenty minutes at dusk and you flush the day's heat out of the house and the attic, then coast on cool air all night. It uses a small fraction of the energy of air conditioning, and it pairs beautifully with the window placement ideas we covered in Screens, Breezes, and Cross-Ventilation Basics. For many coastal homes it's the difference between "we need AC" and "we almost never think about it."

The heat pump: one machine for both seasons

A heat pump is an air conditioner that runs in both directions — it moves heat out of the house in summer and into the house in winter. Its efficiency drops in truly cold climates, which is why the technology gets a lukewarm reputation nationally. But San Diego winters are exactly the conditions where heat pumps shine: mild outdoor air holds plenty of heat to harvest, so the system runs near its best efficiency virtually year-round.

For homes still relying on an aging furnace — common in the midcentury ranches around Clairemont and Allied Gardens — replacing furnace and AC with a single heat pump simplifies the mechanical closet, frees up space, and handles our short heating season without breaking a sweat. Ductless versions are also the cleanest way to condition a converted garage or a new room addition without touching the existing ductwork.

Which one do you actually need?

Often the honest answer is: the fan first. If your discomfort is summer evenings and stuffy bedrooms, night flushing solves most of it for far less. If your problem is January mornings, drafty rooms, or a furnace on its last legs, the heat pump is the move. Fold it into the remodel, not after

Both upgrades are dramatically easier while walls and ceilings are already open. Fan ducting, new electrical runs, refrigerant lines, attic sealing — during construction these are line items; afterward they're their own disruptive projects. If a remodel is anywhere on your horizon, comfort equipment belongs in the design conversation from day one, not as an afterthought once the drywall is painted.
